The Pros and Cons of a Dental Implant

Dental implants require oral surgery to place titanium posts in the patient’s jawbone. While the process may sound uncomfortable, millions of Americans have undergone the treatment and now enjoy restored oral function. This procedure has a very high satisfaction rate among many patients. According to a 2016 study by the National Institutes of Health, 81 percent of patients were satisfied with the improved chewing comfort implants delivered while 94 percent of respondents were satisfied with the aesthetic benefits of dental implants.

Your Denver dentists do not want dental phobia to be a barrier between you, your oral health, and a healthier, more functional smile. Our board-certified periodontist, Dr. Mike Norouzinia, will guide you through every step of the dental implant procedure. Many of our Denver patients come to our office with a common question weighing on their minds: Will getting a dental implant hurt?

Will my implant placement hurt?

Dr. Norouzinia will take careful steps to make your procedure as comfortable as possible. During your initial consultation, we recommend that patients come with questions. Patient education is part of our core mission, and Dr. Norouzinia will take time to explain the dental implant procedure in depth. Many of our patients come with questions and concerns about discomfort and pain.

On the day of your procedure, Dr. Norouzinia will use a local anesthetic to completely numb the gums and jawbone where your implant will be placed. According to the American Dental Association, local anesthesia “is a type of medication used to prevent pain in a specific area of your mouth during treatment by blocking the nerves that sense or transmit pain, which numbs mouth tissues.”

While topical anesthetics are available, dental implant placement will require the use of injectable anesthetics. Local anesthesia is the standard for most implant procedures. If you suffer from dental phobia, you may ask a member of our team what sedation options may be available.

One pain-related factor to consider is the skill of your doctor. Dr. Norouzinia has a reputation for caring about patient comfort. At every step of the procedure, he will be mindful of any discomfort you may be feeling.

It is not uncommon for patients to experience discomfort as the effects of the local anesthesia wear off. Our Denver dental team will be available throughout your recovery to provide advice on pain relief.

After the procedure, your gums may be sore and tender. Rest, ice, and over-the-counter pain medications are usually sufficient to manage pain. Our office uses dissolvable stitches.

Benefits of Dental Implants

While many individuals focus on the surgical aspects of dental implant placement, the procedure delivers life-changing benefits. Once your dental implants heal, you will be fitted with a custom dental crown or implant-retained prosthetic that feels and functions like your natural teeth. No restoration has the ability to promote jawbone health while providing a lifelong solution to tooth loss. Our office offers mini dental implants for patients with deficient jawbone structures.
