You’re enjoying some popcorn in a dark movie theater when you bite down on something hard and wince. There was a rogue unpopped kernel in your buttery treat, and you now have a chipped tooth! Though seemingly a small problem, a chipped tooth can have a big impact on your appearance. Plus, depending on the extent of the damage, you could suffer functional and oral health problems, too.

At Metropolitan Dental Care, we offer both restorative and cosmetic dentistry for chipped teeth. Whether you need a minor touch-up or a more extensive procedure, once you are done, your tooth will look and function like new

What causes a chipped tooth?

Your teeth are covered by hard protective enamel. But a fall, blow to the face, or biting down on something hard can damage even the healthiest teeth.

Of course, teeth that are already weakened are more susceptible to chips. For instance, if you suffer from bruxism (chronic teeth grinding), the continual pressure can compromise your teeth over time. Bad habits, like nail biting or crunching ice, can also make you prone to chipping.

Because bruxism can lead to chipped teeth, this type of damage is also related to stress. Dentists reported a 63% increase in chipped teeth during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Porcelain Veneers

If the chip is small, affecting only the surface or edge of a front tooth, a veneer is likely a solution. Thin shells of porcelain, veneers adhere to the surface of teeth. They are remarkably lifelike, especially since today’s materials have a natural translucence and sparkle. Plus, with proper care, they can last ten years or more.

Dental Bonding

Bonding offers similar results to veneers, but it can be a better option for a tight budget. Since veneers are only intended for front teeth, bonding may also be appropriate if you have a chipped molar

During this treatment, your dentist will fill the chip with composite resin. He or she will sculpt the material, giving it a smooth, natural finish. A curing light will harden the composite.

In some cases, your dentist may also be able to bond the broken piece of your tooth back in place. If you have a large chip, be sure to save the missing piece in water, saliva, or milk, and bring it with you to your appointment.

Dental Crowns

If the chip is particularly large, your dentist may recommend a crown. We offer crowns made from porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal, and zirconia. These materials are strong and durable. Unlike older metal crowns, they have a much more lifelike appearance. Zirconia is especially realistic. 36% of dentists who use zirconia do so primarily because of its translucency and the fact that it so closely matches the natural color of teeth.
